WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the award of $24.7 million to 98 local public housing authorities (PHAs) across the country to provide permanent affordable housing to non-elderly persons with disabilities.โฏThis award allows these PHAs to house up to 2,210 additional families, and further support community integration for persons with disabilities.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development tweeted this less than a day ago and to many families, this is a major relief. We have first hand experience renting to people with disabilities and it is no joke.
You might see headline and think that its lazy individuals who will take advantage of these vouchers but we have yet to experience that. When it comes to disabilities, the PHAs really do vet the applicants and when they are awarded, it is a life changing experience for the individual and their families.
We currently help to provide housing for 3 such individuals who qualify.
I myself have a story of disability in my family. Luckily, our family has the resources to take care of her, but if she didn’t have us, what would she have?
She is unable to do fast moving manual labor (she’s very small and even though she is 30 years old, she looks like a middle schooler), she can’t work in the service industry (customers would be frustrated at the service speed, and she can’t do many other cognitive job functions (her brain doesn’t operate at a normal level).
I think to my cousin and wonder if she didn’t have us as a family, who would she have? How would she live? I can only come to one reasonable conclusion and that is she would be homeless and most likely starve to death.
In order for someone with disabilities to live, they need so much support, and one of those critical support programs is Public Housing, and Public Housing vouchers. There is no other reasonable way (at least, not that I have heard of).
If you’re thinking about joining a program to provide housing to people in need, I can tell you the applicant pool is virtually endless. There are 1,000s of people locally to you that are desperate for a safe place to live, and if no one helps them, they are going to lose their voucher.
The $24.7 Million is a nice start. That funding is for people like you ready to help others.
